In order to fulfill its role as ASEAN energy think tank as well as energy data centre and knowledge hub, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) is working on the 5th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO5), as a follow up to the AEO4 launched in January this year. The development of AEO5 started with a Kick-Off Meeting on 10-11 October 2016 and followed with the 1st Working Group Meeting on 12-14 October 2016 in Bali, Indonesia. This event was organised by ACE, supported by Renewable Energy Support Programme for ASEAN (ASEAN-RESP), a jointly implemented project by ACE and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).   The AEO5 is developed with the technical assistance of Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI), with the objective of providing a medium to long-term energy projections in ASEAN (up to 2040).

The Kick-Off Meeting was attended by 13 participants from 7 ASEAN Member States (AMS), 6 international/regional experts, 3 consultants, 4 ACE officers and 2 GIZ officers. It was opened with awelcome remarks from ACE’s Executive Director, Dr. Sanjayan Velautham; GIZ Principal Advisor for ASEAN-RESP, Maria-José Poddey; and the Indonesian Senior Officials on Energy Leader, Ir. Jarman, M.Sc. The 1^st Working Group Meeting explored the AEO5 content at a technical level.  The AMS representatives (11) and the consultants discussed how to collect data from the AMS and to improve modelling skills in the region.
