ASEAN EE&C to Meet Growing Energy Demand and Help Protect the Environment

The 20th Annual Meeting of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Sub-sector Network (EE&C-SSN) was opened by H.E. U Khin Maung Cho, Union, Minister of Industry, Myanmar, on 6 May 2016.  In his opening speech, H.E warmly welcomed all delegates and expressed his sincere appreciation for their participation in the Meeting. He emphasised the meeting’s objective to further strengthen the relationships between ASEAN Member States through cooperation. He encouraged the cooperation to continue pursuing the targets of EE&C programme under the new ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016-2025. He stated the need to promote EE&C to meet the growing energy demand, as well as to save the environment.

Organised in Myanmar’s capital, Nay Pyi Taw, the Meeting was attended by 40 (forty) delegates from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Also in attendance were the representatives from ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Energy Conservation Center, Japan (ECCJ), International Copper Alliance (ICA), and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), Thailand, chaired the Meeting on following key topics: i) review on the directives of the 33rd AMEM; ii) outcomes of ASEAN Energy Awards 2016 Board of Judges (BOJ) Evaluation Meeting for EE&C competition: iii) the accomplishments of EE&C programme; iv) reports on activities with dialogue partners (DPs) and international organisations (IOs); v) discussions on APAEC 2016-2025’ s programme area no. 4 – EE&C; and vi) agreement on priorities for action plan and implementation arrangements, key performance and timeline of EE&C programme for the period of 2016-2017.
