ASEAN Statistics in Policy

20 September 2016

During the week of the 34th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Nay Pyi Taw, (Myanmar), the International Energy Agency (IEA) conducted a workshop on ‘ASEAN Statistics in Policy’ for all ASEAN Member States (AMS) on 19-20 September 2016. The Workshop was hosted by Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MoEE) of Myanmar and supported by ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). The objective of the Workshop is to discuss the importance of good energy data for policymaking and to share best practices in data collection, coordination and use.

The Workshop was attended by participants from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, ACE, IEA and several ministries in Myanmar. In this workshop, the keynote speakers were coming from IEA (Mr. Duncan Millard, Mr. Nikolaos Kordevas and Ms. Céline Rouquette) and ACE (Mr. Beni Suryadi). To gain more knowledge in preparation of ASEAN Energy Database System (AEDS) and the 5th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO5), ACE sent two officers (Pinto Anugrah and Aloysius Damar Pranadi) in this workshop. Through this workshop, ACE participants learned how they can effectively collect data and solve the data problems in the energy balance table (EBT).

The lessons-learned can be summarised as follows: 1) data collection is an important part of EBT development, 2) coordination of relevant offices in the ministries is important to generate good data.  Additionally, the AMS made some suggestions on statistics in policy, while IEA and ACE shared their experiences in energy statistics.
