East-South Kalimantan

Interconnection

In 1998, PLN conducted a pre-feasibility study on interconnection of East to South Kalimantan. The interconnection plan will consist of 150 kV, OHL, 275 km length connecting Karang Joang ( East Kalimantan) and Barikin (South Kalimantan).

The objectives of the interconnection are to :

1)   Enhance the reliability of supply and reduce sharing reserve. Interconnection of
both systems could reduce 50 MW in installed capacity.

2)   Maximise the utilisation of Asam-Asam Coal Fired Plant (2 x 65 MW) during off-
peak. The unit size of Asam-Asam SCPP is relatively large compared to the
peak load in South Kalimantan system before interconnection.

3)   Reduce oil utilisation in both systems.

The cost of interconnection is estimated to be about US$ 38.4 million. This covers the cost for the construction of double circuit 150 kV line of 275 km, 2 new 150 kV S/S and extension of 2 existing 150 kV S/S at both systems. This interconnection is targeted for completion by 2003.
