Java-Sumatra Interconnection

In 2000, PLN reviewed the plan for Java-Sumatra interconnection by submarine cable. It was concluded that the link will initially operate in 2005 (AC 150 kV with capacity of 200 MW). The link stretches from Ketapang (Sumatra) to Salira (Java). The length of submarine cable is approximately 39 km. consisting of 4 single core of cable including 1 spare.

The objectives of interconnection are:

1)  To exchange power between Java-Bali system and Southern Sumatra.

2)  To cover the electricity shortage in south Sumatra grid in short term. It was
forecast that the South Sumatra system will experience shortages in supply
     by 2005 and beyond.

3)  To transfer 1,120 MW  (4 x 280 MW) of power by bipolar two circuit operation
in long term with the submarine cable to be operated as DC 200 kV link.

Construction cost for the interconnection (4 x 280 MW) is estimated at about US$ 134 million consisting of a submarine cable link, 150 kV overhead transmission line, extension substation, cable terminal stations and related protection, and control including telecommunication system.
