Interconnection

A high voltage interconnection with Thailand at 132/115kV was commissioned in February 1981 to facilitate the transfer of power between TNB and the Southern EGAT system. The TNB system is also interconnected with Singapore (PUB) via a 230kV power link consisting of 2x250 MVA submarine cables.

The proposed EGAT-TNB HVDC link is being implemented and targeted to be energized by the end of 2001. This link is rated at 300MW, with provisions to upgrade it to 600MW in the future.

Another HVDC link between Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak in East Malaysia, which was to be implemented, has been deferred indefinitely as a result of the economic slowdown in the region. There is also the option of interconnecting Peninsular Malaysia with Sumatra, Indonesia across the Straits of Malacca.
