Introduction
After the economic crisis which started in late 1997, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has already revised its power development plan (PDP) in line with the declining demand. The impact of the economic downturn on the power demand was very severe. The country's demand for 1998 and 1999 dropped significantly. However, the economy has shown a sign of recovery in 2001 since the demand has outgrown its past record.
EGAT is, therefore, reviewing the PDP again by taking into consideration the present economic condition as well as to plan for future strategies to compete in the liberalized power market which will take place soon in the near future.
