As one of the fastest growing economic regions in the world, the ASEAN is faced with a rising demand for energy. To meet the region’s energy needs, peaceful/civilian nuclear power is being considered and the need to standardize, coordinate, and shape policy for peaceful/civilian nuclear power development and programs related to nuclear security is critical.

In order to assist ASEAN’s capacity in the promotion of the peaceful/civilian nuclear power program, it is essential to support a standardized regional approach to, and improved coordination of, activities related to nuclear power development. The Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Global Partnership Program (GPP), Nuclear and Radiological Security portfolio (NRS) has received approval for funding to work in cooperation with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) to fund a Nuclear and Radiological Security Expert/Coordinator at the ACE for a 2-year period.

The priority theme areas that are contained in the Key Element of Questionnaires are as follow, but not limited to:
• Pre-feasibility study on Nuclear Power Plants, which includes physical security;
• Transportation of nuclear materials in the region;
• Legal and regulatory frameworks – national legislation framework, nuclear security, nuclear regulatory body and laws;
• Codes and standards.
