The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), supported by the Energy Foundation China (EFC), conducted a site visit to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Gentari (PETRONAS) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 14 October 2025. As part of the public launching of two reports on ASEAN Energy Investment, the visit was aimed to be a knowledge sharing opportunities about clean energy development in ASEAN and support opportunities for further collaboration on sustainable energy projects in the ASEAN region. Participants comprised representatives from ACE, ASEAN Member States (A), and China with various related backgrounds including government, private, to experts.
The visit commenced with a welcoming remark from H. Abdul Rahim bin Abd Jamil, Head of International Regulations & Relations, Regulatory and Stakeholder Management Division at TNB. He warmly welcomed delegates and provide a short introduction of TNB and emphasised on shared vision of navigating the ongoing energy transition through regional and international cooperation. Then, Dr. Zulfikar Yurnaidi, Manager of Energy Modelling and Policy Planning at ACE, followed with his remarks which underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing sustainable and low carbon energy, particularly in ensuring the financing aspect of energy transition. XING Yunfei, International Cooperation Officer at EFC, also introduced the organisation and China delegates.

The session at TNB was followed by a presentation from each side. First to present was Ir. Norhasbi bin Abdul Wahab, Head of Grid Planning, Grid Strategy, Grid Division at TNB. With the main theme “ASEAN Power Grid Positioning Malaysia as ASEAN’s Energy Hub”, Ir. Norhasbi discussed Malaysia and TNB’s role in promoting regional power system integration, particularly on the targeted 18 key ASEAN Power Grid projects. XING Yunfei, International Cooperation Officer at the EFC, delivered a presentation on the low carbon energy development in China, including the key challenges and opportunities. The discussion that followed explored the topic of advancing cross-border energy connectivity in-depth and potential collaboration amongst the stakeholders, including financing needs.
The visit to Gentari, a clean energy subsidiary of Petronas, on October 14, 2025 in the afternoon began with opening remarks from M. Huzaini Ghazali, Chief Strategy and Portfolio Officer, Gentari. Mr. Huzaini with greeting the participant and shared his hope of strengthened relationship through cooperation exploration in the future. Dr Zulfikar Yurnaidi of ACE was second to give his speech, reiterating the importance of the shared learning opportunity to achieve the same goal of cleaner and secure energy systems. After that, XING Yunfei of EFC further emphasised the statements and expressed the firm commitment of utilise the event as a knowledge exchange platform.

The sharing session was started with presentation from Gentari, which was delivered by Prakash Rao Sanasaya, Head of Corporate and Business Strategy at Gentari. The presentation introduced Gentari’s business profile and portfolio, which currently focuses on three pillars—renewable energy, hydrogen, and green mobility. XING Yunfei from EFC also presented at this opportunity, sharing the works of EFC and the progress of China on clean energy transition. After all presentations were delivered, the floor was opened for discussions, particularly on the technicalities of how others can support renewable business model.

The site visit provided valuable insights into clean energy development, investment opportunities, and best practices that can be applied across the ASEAN region. It also reinforced the importance of collaboration between public and private stakeholders in advancing sustainable energy initiatives to support the APAEC 2026-2030, including international partners. Moreover, it provides more applicable context in the topic prior to the launching of the ASEAN Energy Investment 2025 and 2025 ASEAN Capacjty Building Roadmap on Energy Investment, which was officially launched during the 25th ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-25) on 15 October 2025.
