The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), through the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), remains committed to addressing global supply challenges by implementing the Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) initiative under the ASEAN Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS). The initiative has recorded energy savings of 106 GWh, translating into an estimated RM39 million in annual cost savings.
This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, during the EMGS Certificate Presentation Ceremony held at EQ Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

“In addition, the initiative has contributed to a reduction of 81.7 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions annually. A total of 205 organisations across Malaysia have participated in the EMGS certification programme under AEMAS, with 601 assessments conducted. From its implementation in 2010 to December 2025, the programme has recorded a reduction of more than 300,000 tonnes of CO₂e emissions”, said by the Deputy Minister at the launching ceremony today.
From the initial 205 organisations at the 1-Star level, 166 organisations have progressed to the 2-Star level, while 157 organisations have achieved the 3-Star level. Of these, 74 organisations have maintained their highest-level certification through continuous renewal.
In 2025 alone, 133 organisations successfully obtained EMGS certification, including 22 organisations awarded 1-Star certification, four (4) organisations awarded 2-Star certification, and 107 organisations awarded 3-Star certification, including renewals. Additionally, five (5) organisations received Special Awards in recognition of their strong commitment to implementing EMGS at their facilities.
The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Secretary-General (Environmental Sustainability) of NRES, Datuk Nor Yahati Awang; Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of MGTC, Saiful Adib Abd Munaff; and Corporate Affairs Officer of ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), Dr Andy Tirta.

AEMAS, introduced by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) in 2010, aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions among ASEAN member states through efficient and sustainable energy management practices. In Malaysia, the energy sector accounted for approximately 79% of total,national GHG emissions in 2021, covering sub-sectors such as electricity generation, petroleum refining, manufacturing and construction industries, transportation, and fugitive emissions. As such, efficient energy management is no longer optional but a fundamental requirement in addressing the global climate crisis.
MGTC has been appointed as the country coordinator for AEMAS in Malaysia. The programme includes the Energy Manager Training Course (EMTC), which develops Certified Energy Managers, as well as EMGS certification for organisations that adopt best practices in energy management through the implementation of Sustainable Energy Management Systems (SEMS).
The Ministry remains committed to supporting energy efficiency initiatives under AEMAS, in line with national targets outlined in the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP) 2016–2025, the National Energy Policy 2022–2040, and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), as well as the implementation of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2024.
At the same time, broader participation from public and private sector organisations, as well as industry players, in energy efficiency initiatives will directly contribute to climate change mitigation efforts and support Malaysia’s aspiration of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
