Highlights

  • Digitalisation is a key enabler for ASEAN’s energy transition, driving decarbonisation, energy efficiency, and resilience while addressing the rising energy demand across the region.
  • Digitalisation supports efficiency, safety, cost savings, and decarbonisation not only in electricity but also in oil and gas, heating/cooling, transport, and industrial energy systems.
  • ASEAN Member States are gradually adopting digital technologies, such as Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence, to modernise energy systems and integrate renewable energy sources, especially solar and wind.
  • Challenges to digital transformation in the energy sector include regulatory fragmentation, disparities in digital infrastructure development, financial barriers, a lack of technical capacity, and cybersecurity risks.
  • To accelerate digital transformation in the energy sector, the region should focus on harmonising standards, improving rural connectivity, promoting innovative financing models, enhancing skills, and setting cybersecurity frameworks.
